Deer Vitals

It does not matter if you are a seasoned hunter or just starting out as a first year hunter. We all need to be reminded and aware of shot placement. As bowhunters it is even more critical that we are aware of the vitals on the game we pursue.

By now everyone should be practicing, not only shooting field tips but broadheads as well. Good luck and shoot straight.

Coyote Vital Target

Now that I have the Bushmaster .223 sighted in I can start to think about Coyote hunting.  There are several coyotes in the area and they definitely have an impact on turkeys and fawns.

Deer Vital Target

I always liked the saying"Aim small, miss small".  As we are preparing for the season I feel it's important to visualize the shot.  A well placed broadhead (fixed or mechanical) will quickly and humanely bring down a whitetail deer.

.243 Range Time

On Sunday I was able to get to the range for a little rifle practice. Shooting the .243 is always fun and it was grouping well. I was shooting almost 1'' groups which is good for me.

It was a beautiful day outside and I seen three gobblers which made the day out even better. I plan on shooting my rifle a few more times before the season starts. But the next range day will be dedicated to practicing with my crossbow.

50, 100, 150 and 200 yard targets. I don't plan on shooting past 150 yards. I know my limitations and my comfort zone. Always shoot within your abilities for a clean ethical hunt.

Tenpoint Practice

I had so much fun shooting my Tenpoint on Sunday that I had to shoot again on Monday. Shooting at 50 yards, I'm a little high and to the left but my bolts are touching for a very tight group!

Tenpoint Crossbow 20 Yards

Archery season is almost here and I wanted to get in a little shooting practice and try out my GoPro camera. I can't wait for this season to start!

Crossbow Practice

I was able to get in a few practice shots yesterday with my Tenpoint Maverick. The bow is sighted in and ready for the season.  The only thing left to do is shoot my Magnus Buzz Cut Broadheads.

Crossbow Practice

I did a little shooting yesterday with my Tenpoint Maverick crossbow.  It's the first time I have shot my crossbow since last year.  As you can see, I am shooting just a hair to the right.  The next time out I will adjust my scope and get into the black.

This was the first shot at twenty yards.

This was at 40 yards

30 Yards of Deadly

I was shooting my Tenpoint crossbow at 30 yards last night, and it is spot on.   The system I am using (brace, BMF trigger activator) is so solid and provides such a stable shooting platform, that I have confidence in every shot.

Now it's time to practice 40 and 50 yard shots.  Other people may out shoot me, but as a quadriplegic I'm pretty happy with my shots!

Deer Vitals

As we are practicing for archery season it's very important to understand the anatomy of the deer.  Shot placement has to be our goal for a quick, clean, ethical kill.

Aim small, miss small, pick your target for the best possible shot.  Good luck!

3 - D Follow up Post

I should mention that I think shooting at 3-D targets is a great deal of fun and very realistic.  It also provides an opportunity to learn to estimate accurate yardage and proper shot placement on the animal you are hunting.

Unfortunately, I rarely shoot at 3-D targets using my crossbow because of arrow penetration.  My Parker Buck Buster 175 will sink a crossbow bolt (arrow) 8 or 9 inches into the 3-D target.  This makes it extremely difficult to pull the arrow out.

Whoever is assisting me with shooting that day has a really difficult time pulling out the bolt and re-cocking my crossbow.  It really becomes a lot of work.

I enjoy using a target bag like this one, it lets my assistant easily pull the bolt from the target.  How about you?  What types of targets do you enjoy shooting at?
