First Day of PA Trout 2012

BEST GRILLED TROUT

Read more about it at www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,2217,157176-224203,00.html
Content Copyright © 2012 Cooks.com - All rights reserved.
4 whole trout, cleaned
8 strips of bacon
1 lemon
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 med. onion, sliced

Slice lemon in half and slice half the lemon into slim wedges. Mix Maple syrup and brown sugar together and brush inside of trout with mixture. Stuff the trout with lemon and onion slices. Brush more maple syrup mixture on outside of fish. Lay out a large enough piece of aluminum foil to wrap the fish completely. Lay a strip of bacon down and place fish on top of it, lay another strip of bacon over the top and wrap loosely in aluminum foil. Place on grill over medium low heat for 15-20 minutes until bacon is done and fish flakes. Squeeze other half of lemon over fish or garnish with wedges from other part of lemon. (You can also add other spices/seasonings to suit taste. I enjoy some cayenne in mine)

Good Luck to all you out there fishing today in Southeastern Pa, trout season opens state wide on April 14,2012.  I'm not much of a fisherman but I do see the attraction to being on the water.  Have fun, and be safe !

Elusion Camo Mobi-Blind

Are you a mobile blind ?  If your ready to roll for spring turkey, go to Elusion Camo and get your Mobi-Blind.  You will disappear into the background and be more independent without using a traditional groundblind....

I can't wait to receive my new pattern Valley Vaporizer, it's in the mail now.  I plan on using it for spring turkey at the end of April here in PA.

Tom from Pa Writes..

The weather has been great the last few days, we have been strutting in the fields and fanning for hens...lol

I am so ready to take one of these mature Toms down.  Several of us guys in wheelchairs from Western Pa Wounded Warriors will be trying to harvest a spring gobbler with a crossbow this year, whats your weapon of choice ?

Rage Chisel Tip

Rage just came out with a new chisel tip broadhead.  I am a big Rage fan and will be using them again this fall. The Rage Chisel Tip is available in three versions. The 2-blade Rage Chisel Tip has a 2-inch cutting diameter and is available in both 100- and 125-grain weights. The 100-grain 3-blade has a 1.5-inch cutting diameter. What is your broadhead of choice ?

Blood Vane

Has anyone tried these ?  They look good to me, I might give them a try....

UPDATE:

I just spoke with the president of the company and unfortunately they do not produce this product for crossbow bolts at this time. However, they may start producing it next year and if they do I will be doing a review for all of you.

Plymouth Ma Turkeys

It looks like my friend Tracy found a few birds this morning by her place.  What a beautiful way to start the day in New England.  I love looking at Wild Turkeys.

Talking Turkey

Shooting in my mossberg 12 gauge tomorrow afternoon, I can't wait.

As you can tell, I am pretty excited about this year's spring gobbler season.  My only concern is, all this warm weather in Pa maybe bad for spring gobbler in May.. whats your thoughts?

NWTF Banquet 2012

Last night I went to the NWTF, 19th Annual, Warrior Trail Gobblers Chapter's banquet in Waynesburg Pa.  It was a great night out with family and friends.

What I liked best about the night was, 20 shotguns were given away for free to kids 17 and younger.  It was by lottery and two kids at our table won !  They were beyond excited to say the least.

The future of hunting is our youth and this was a great beginning for these 20 kids, good luck and be safe !

Pa 2011-12 Deer Harvest

GAME COMMISSION RELEASES 2011-12 DEER HARVEST ESTIMATES

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Game Commission today reported that, in the state’s 2011-12 seasons, hunters harvested an estimated 336,200 deer, which is an increase of six percent from the previous seasons’ harvest of 316,240.

Hunters took 127,540 antlered deer in the 2011-12 seasons, an increase of four percent from the previous license year’s harvest of 122,930.  Also, hunters harvested 208,660 antlerless deer in 2011-12, which is an increase of eight percent from the 193,310 antlerless deer taken in 2010-11.

“This year’s antlered deer harvest is slightly above average harvest since 2005, when the Game Commission began efforts to stabilize deer populations in most of the state,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director.  “Antlered deer harvests increased in 13 of the state’s 22 Wildlife Management Units.

Scouting Turkeys

Now is the time to do some long range scouting for ol Tom turkey.  I don't do any calling and I try to view them from a distance.  No sense in educating that gobbler or letting him know that I am even in the woods.  And just like hunting whitetail deer, I always say find the ladies and the big boys will be close by...

Paper Turkey Target

I insert this picture into a MS Word document then change the size to 8.5 x 10.0 and send it to my printer.  It makes patterning my mossberg so much easier.  What do you do to prepare or get ready for spring gobbler season?

Over the next few weeks I will take you through my process.  I love to be in the woods in spring !

Caldwell Deadshot Fieldpod

I just ordered this gun mount and can't wait to see if it meets the needs of disabled hunters.  Because it is main stream and marketed to the able bodied community, it is 1 / 4 the price of adapted shooting equipment.  Stay tuned for a review of the Caldwell Deadshot Fieldpod

2011 FINAL BEAR HARVEST SETS NEW RECORD

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today announced that the final bear harvest results from the state’s three recently concluded seasons show that hunters harvested 4,350 bears, which sets a new record as the highest in Pennsylvania history.

On Dec. 5, preliminary harvest of 3,968 was announced, but that figure did not include complete reports from all check stations.

The final harvest tallies by season is: 304 bears taken during the statewide, five-day archery bear season;

3,168 bears taken during the four-day bear season, which included a Saturday-opener; and 878 bears taken during the extended bear season held in various Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) during all or portions of the first week of the deer season.

Accessible Trigger

If you are looking for an adapted trigger, I recommend the BMF Trigger from Cabelas .  It's $23.00 and works great.  I have no finger movement and pull the crank toward me using my wrist.

It is ambidextrous, reliable and cheap enough to put one on several weapons, so no need to install and remove from shotgun to rifle to crossbow.  I also keep a spare in my backpack because I'm just that way...lol

Good luck shooting, send me your stories, ideas and tips for adapted hunting !

Bush Pilots

Two hunters got a pilot to fly them into the Canadian wilderness where they managed to bag two big Bull Moose. As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said the plane could only take the hunters, their gear and one Moose.

The hunters strongly objected saying: "Last year we shot two and the pilot let us take them both... And he had the exact same airplane as yours!" Reluctantly, the pi...lot, not wanting to be outdone by another bush pilot, gave in and everything was loaded.

However, even under full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down, crashing in the wooded wilderness. Somehow, surrounded by the moose, clothing and sleeping bags, Stosh and Stan survived the crash.

After climbing out of the wreckage, Stosh asked Stan: "Any idea where we are?" Stan replied: "I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year!"

Digital Camo

Here is the digital pattern that I am going to use to camouflage my mossberg 12 gauge shotgun with before spring turkey season.  I have three flat colors that should work nicely.
