American hunter just published there list of top crossbows for 2016. I am not surprised that Tenpoint is number one on the list.  Tenpoint is located in Ohio and if you ever get the chance to visit there shop I can personally recommend going.

Crossbow Maintenance

Its important to check your crossbow for any cracks on the limbs or defects every year. Routine maintenance includes making sure everything is tight and properly lubricated. Tenpoint found a crack in my limb yesterday at the factory and replaced it all under warranty.

The pro staff at Tenpoint were extremely friendly and made the whole process very easy. It was my first trip to the factory in Ohio but it will not be the last. I plan on taking my crossbow in for inspection and routine maintenance every year.  Check out their tune up special offer HERE

If you are planning to archery hunt turkeys this year, please get your bow or crossbow inspected. Good luck and be safe.

Tenpoint Practice

I had so much fun shooting my Tenpoint on Sunday that I had to shoot again on Monday. Shooting at 50 yards, I'm a little high and to the left but my bolts are touching for a very tight group!

Crossbow Practice

I was able to get in a few practice shots yesterday with my Tenpoint Maverick. The bow is sighted in and ready for the season.  The only thing left to do is shoot my Magnus Buzz Cut Broadheads.

Crossbow Practice

I did a little shooting yesterday with my Tenpoint Maverick crossbow.  It's the first time I have shot my crossbow since last year.  As you can see, I am shooting just a hair to the right.  The next time out I will adjust my scope and get into the black.

This was the first shot at twenty yards.

This was at 40 yards

Practice Makes Perfect

They say " Practice Makes Perfect " I just like to shoot, so my brother and I went to the range yesterday with our crossbows.

He shoots a Parker Buck Buster 175 pound crossbow and I shoot a Tenpoint Maverick 175 pound crossbow.  We each shoot 20'' bolts with 100 grain tips.  We are both using Magnus Buzz cut broadheads this year for the first time.

Last night we were shooting 30 yards and cutting the X every time.  Next time out I want to shoot 20 and 40 yard groups and even try a few 50 yard shots.  I am confident with the new gun mount and my shooting has never been better in a wheelchair.

If I keep shooting this well, it's going to be a great archery season!  Get out to the range and practice, practice, practice.

3 Inside a Quarter

It's been awhile since I shot tight groups like 3 crossbow bolts inside a quarter at 30 yards, but yesterday it all came together.  The new Gun Mount is so steady I was driving bolts home with every shot.

I forgot that shooting at the same bulls eye can get expensive,  I trashed two bolts and a third nock.  If you are shooting a Tenpoint crossbow, make sure you shoot one bolt at a target.  Sending three down range at the same bulls eye will just cost you money.

But after 14 years of shooting 3-4'' groups, it was money well spent seeing my bolts touching.  With the right mount and great archery equipment, even I can shoot tight groups again.

TenPoint Secures Patent on Crossbow Unloading Bolt : The Outdoor Wire

TenPoint Secures Patent on Crossbow Unloading Bolt : The Outdoor Wire

For $8.00 a six pack, I think I will keep using a practice arrow with a field tip for my fall hunts.  That being said, once the ground becomes frozen, I think these arrows will find a place in my quiver.

Last year we shattered two practice arrows shooting the crossbow off into the ground in the late second season. The ground was like cement here in Pa.  Look for a review of these disposable bolts closer to fall.

TenPoint Introduces All-Purpose Omni-Nock : The Outdoor Wire

TenPoint Introduces All-Purpose Omni-Nock : The Outdoor Wire

I have not used this new nock from TenPoint yet but it looks good.  I have been using the half moon nock the last several years on a 20'' carbon bolt.

Which nock and arrow combination do you use?

Crossbows

On Sunday I was at Falcon Archers and a woman asked me which crossbow I thought was best. I told her I was no expert by any means but I believe the best crossbow for me is made by Parker. I shoot the Buck Buster 175.

Today there are a variety of crossbows on the market and the choices seem almost endless. These crossbows all very in price from a few hundred dollars to over $1000. Unless you are unbelievably wealthy, price has to be a factor in determining which crossbow is for you.

I have shot the Parker crossbow for the last three years and I love it. I can't see spending twice the price with the results I am currently getting. That's not to say that I have not looked into buying another crossbow.

Barnett makes the Ghost which I like, and Kodabow makes a great crossbow too.  Another friend of mine shoots a TenPoint crossbow which he likes a lot.  It all comes down to personal choice and your checkbook.

So which is best, a ford a dodge or a chevy?  Yep it's like that....

Slick Tip Field Points

My Parker crossbow drives my bolts very deep into 3 D targets, so much that they are hard to remove.  I am thinking of trying these 100 grain Slick Tips  , has anyone used these ?  The MFG claims they are 30 % easier to remove than regular field tips....

When I shoot a 3 D target like this one, my bolt penetrates about 5 inches and is almost impossible to pull out.

Bag targets like this one are very easy to retrieve the bolt from.  I prefer to shoot at bag targets but 3 D can be so much fun. Stay tuned for my review of Slick Tips Field Points.. 30 % easier removal just might make 3 D fun again.

Pa BOARD MAKES EXPANDED USE OF CROSSBOWS PERMANENT

BOARD MAKES EXPANDED USE OF CROSSBOWS PERMANENT

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to make permanent the lawful use of crossbows in archery deer and bear seasons.  The Board took this action by removing the sunset date inserted into the regulations in 2009, which required the Board and agency staff to review the impact of expanded use of crossbows on the deer and bear resource before June 30, 2012.  The Board must give final adoption to this action in April.
